Susanna Tardi, Ph.D.
Biography

Susanna Tardi is a Professor in the Department of Sociology where she has taught undergraduate and graduate courses in research methods, race and ethnic relations, Italian and Italian American culture, and criminal justice.

Her research interests are varied and most recently include the following refereed works: a book chapter entitled Case Study Methodology in Higher Education; an Italian translation of her previously published article entitled “The Changing roles of Italian American Women: Reality vs Myth,” Rome, Italy: Aracne Editrice; and a co-authored article: The Rise of Contingent Faculty in the US System of Higher Education in the Journal of International Management Studies.

Professor Tardi is an active leader in both the Faculty Senate and Union. She is currently the President of the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) Local 1796 (WP); Executive Vice-President for Higher Education for the AFT New Jersey State Federation; Chair of the Higher Education Leadership Council representing public and private universities in NJ and hospitals and health care facilities; and the Legislative Representative for the Council of New Jersey State College Locals. She has been an active advocate for public higher education in the State, and influencer in higher education policy formulation. She has testified before Assembly and Senate Higher Education and Budget Committees on issues regarding tenure reform, performance based funding, college affordability, access and accountability, fee transparency, adjunct faculty exploitation, and the 3+1. She served on Governor Murphy’s Transition Team and on the Task Force on New Jersey’s State Plan for Higher Education. She has published Opinion/Editorial commentary pieces and has been interviewed by media outlets (NJ TV, nj.com, Star Ledger, Bergen Record, philly.com, Philadelphia Inquirer) on higher education issues.

Over the years, Professor Tardi’s awards include: a joint NJ Senate/Assembly citation for Excellence in Service, two University Faculty Excellence in Service Awards, the Students First Award, and a UNICO Award for service to the Italian-American community.
