Associate Director, Recreational Services

William Paterson University invites applications for the position of Associate Director, Recreational Services. This is a 12-month professional staff position.

 

Reporting to the Director of Recreational Services, the Associate Director is responsible for providing and creating opportunities for recreation and wellbeing that develop healthy and engaged citizens.  The Associate Director develops and implements innovative large- and small-scale recreational programming for a diverse student body and develops and supervises wellbeing programming, facilities, and staff.  These areas include coordinating and executing outdoor recreation programs and the oversight of recreational aquatics including open recreation swimming and aquatics programming.

The Department of Recreational Services strives to enhance the quality of life for all participants by providing diverse recreational and educational programs that promote health and wellness, encourage social interaction, and develop lifelong leisure time skills.  The Department offers a wide range of activities that reflect the interests, needs, and abilities of the William Paterson University community. At its core, the Department is dedicated to leadership development through experiential learning.

 

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Developing and executing a diverse array of recreational programs to promote engagement and meet the interests of the student body; developing, coordinating, and executing wellbeing engagement programs across the campus community
  • Overseeing the Adventure Series outdoor recreation program
  • Assisting colleagues in the planning, promotion, and operation of Recreational Services programs, events, and Sports and Recreation Center facility rentals
  • Creating, developing and coordinating the planning and administration of fitness facility operations and management
  • Coordinating fitness equipment preventative maintenance, including inspections, inventory, and minor repairs
  • Recruiting, training, and mentoring student fitness staff
  • Serving as the liaison for university partnerships on wellbeing focused collaborations with other university departments and organizations
  • Establishing and evaluating group exercise/small group training programs, workshops, and special events, in keeping with student interests and current trends in order to meet the needs of a diverse University community
  • Assisting to establish long-term vision and strategic plans for university wellbeing initiatives.
  • Supervising and leading the aquatics staff
  • Overseeing open recreation swimming program and developing innovative opportunities for recreation and fitness aquatics programming
  • Collecting and reporting relevant program and event data; developing reporting and providing statistics to review and evaluate programs
  • Overseeing, tracking, and maintaining student and professional staff CPR and first aid certifications and lifeguard staff certifications
  • Providing service to the University by serving on University committees and representing the University at professional conferences and workshops, as deemed necessary.
  • Supervising special event functions as needed, including setup, takedown, and concessions
  • Representing the department in the absence of the Director

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree supplemented by master’s degree from an accredited university, with a degree in exercise science, sport management, health education, health promotion or related field
  • Three or more years of professional experience in collegiate recreation (excluding graduate assistantships and similar graduate-level positions)
  • Experience working with individuals of diverse backgrounds
  • Demonstrated experience hiring, training, and supervising student employees
  • Demonstrated experience developing and leading recreation and/or fitness programs. 
  • Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, which may include early mornings, late evenings, and/or weekends
  • Possess Red Cross CPR/AED and First Aid certifications or be able to obtain within 30 days of hire

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with wellness and/or wellbeing programming and fitness facility oversight
  • Professional staff supervisory experience
  • Outdoor recreation programming experience
  • Aquatics program and staff oversight experience
