Assistant Director, Career Development

Under the direction of the Director of the Career Development Center and under the supervision of the Associate Director, the Assistant Director is responsible for working with students, alumni, other professional staff, faculty and employers to ensure that students are adequately prepared and able to build on developmental goals toward their desired careers. The Assistant Director will meet with students individually and in group settings to facilitate their career decision making process and help develop short and long-term career goals. S/he will develop, implement and coordinate career related workshops, employment placement efforts and serve as a resource to the University community for career related information and services.

As an integral part of the William Paterson community, the Career Development Center collaborates with University and community constituents to empower students to define and achieve their personal, academic, and career development goals.  The Center offers career related resources for students, alumni and employers through best-practice career counseling, coaching, job, internship and graduate school preparation, as well as employment and mentoring connections.   For more information, please visit   https://www.wpunj.edu/career-center/  

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Provides career counseling, career coaching and job search assistance to students in individual and group settings.
  • Organizes and facilitates various Center events and programs including job and internship fairs and on-campus interviews.
  • Coordinates, presents and facilitates workshops as well as class and club presentations; plans and coordinates career awareness programs.
  • Develops new employer relationships in support of assigned college(s) and serves as liaison between employers, students and academic departments.
  • Cultivates new and existing employer relationships to develop internships as well as part-time and full-time job opportunities for students.
  • Attends one-on-one meetings, Chamber of Commerce meetings, professional association events and other appropriate forums to market students to employers.
  • Maintains up-to date and accurate status of activities, prospects and placements.
  • Prepares presentations, reports and other forms of written communication.
  • Serves on Departmental, Divisional and University-wide committees as required.  
  • Works collaboratively with faculty, staff and administration to execute programs and services in a timely and efficient manner.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in counseling, career development, higher education, student development, student personnel services, psychology, or Master of Business Administration.
  • One (1) year full time employer relations experience is required.
  • Availability to work a flexible schedule, which may include extended hours, evenings and weekends.
  • Working knowledge of career management software.
  • Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
  • A valid driver's license.

 

Preferred qualifications:

  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize and organize work.
  • Able to communicate effectively in written and verbal formats.
  • Ability to proactively think through issues, envision solutions, evaluate and allocate necessary resources and create, execute and asses a plan.
  • Strong facilitation and presentation skills
