William Paterson University is seeking applications for an Associate Director, Career Development Center. Under the direction and supervision of the Director of the Career Development Center, the Associate Director is responsible for leading the employer relations team in developing non-credited internships and varied job opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students. The successful candidate works with students, alumni, other professional staff, faculty and employers to ensure that students are adequately prepared and able to build on developmental goals toward desired careers.  This position implements and coordinates career related workshops, employment placement efforts and serves as a resource to the University community for career related information and services. The Associate Director will also oversee the Pesce Family Mentoring Institute.

The Pesce Family Institute is housed within the Career Development Center. This Institute, made possible by a generous gift by William Pesce and his family utilizes the power of mentor-mentee relationships to help students for careers or graduate level education.  For more information please visit

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Training, evaluating and supervising career center Assistant Directors and supervising/coordinating Pesce Family Mentoring Institute staff; supervising and managing job-related activities of Professional Staff members; providing guidance, establishing priorities, recommending professional development activities; evaluating performance. Organizing, creating and leading job development and employer relations activities for internships, career related part-time employment and full-time employment for undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Cultivating new employer relationships through one-on-one meetings with prospective employers
  • Assisting employers with posting job opportunities on internet-based job search site
  • Collaborating with the Career Development Employer Advisory Board to cultivate and strengthen employer-university relationships and provide feedback designed to prepare students to transition to the workforce
  • Serving as liaison between employers, students, academic departments and the Center; ensuring that employer’s needs are met in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Providing students with job search and interview assistance, mock interviews, resume and cover letter writing and critiquing, job etiquette, networking and job search networking techniques; individual and group career and job search counseling.
  • Preparing public relations materials and advertising departmental events.
  • Representing the department at Open Houses and Orientation programs for students.
  • Preparing reports and studies for review by supervisor; maintains pertinent records and files.
  • Staying current and informing management about career development and job market trends
  • Performing other duties as assigned that are appropriate for the position.

Required qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Counseling, Student Personnel Services, Psychology, Career Counseling or Masters of Business Administration.
  • Five (5) or more years of employer relations experience or relevant experience working in a Career Development Office
  • Working knowledge of career management software
  • Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.

  • Academic setting experience 
  • Supervisory experience
  • Familiarity with performance management and development strategies.
