Director of Communications, Office of the President

William Paterson University is accepting applications for a Director of Communications. Reporting directly to the President, the Director of Communications works independently and in collaboration with other offices to develop a comprehensive, consistent and effective communication for the President and the Office of the President. The Director also has primary responsibility for preparing speeches, announcements and presentations. The selected candidate interacts with internal and external constituents in the course of assigned responsibilities.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • In conjunction with the President and VP for Marketing and Public Relations, develops overarching themes to be incorporated into the President’s messaging throughout the year.
  • Writes speeches, introductions, and materials for internal and external publication, including major initiatives such as fall and spring speeches to the community; Commencement speeches; special and routine announcements; as well as other material as directed by the President.
  • Develops correspondence for use by the President to state and local officials.
  • Researches, develops and maintains content for social media outlets.
  • Produces web-optimized content and moves content from concept to implementation with minimal editorial oversight.
  • Works with the Webmaster on the distribution of materials through internal announcements.
  • Performs other duties as assigned that are appropriate for the position.   

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university
  • Five (5) years of experience in speech writing, public communications, and/or writing for a chief executive.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and effectively, with special attention to sensitivities of disparate internal and external audiences. Preference given to candidates with a background working in a higher education setting.
  • Keen attention to detail with exceptional writing, editing, and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work well in a team and to build relationships with campus partners and subject matter experts.
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills and the ability to multitask and meet tight deadlines.
  • Possesses careful judgment and discretion to work with sensitive information and maintain strict confidentiality.
  • Demonstrated understanding of social media strategy for an executive, as well as web content creation and management.
  • Possesses excellent computer skills.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Master's degree
  • Higher Education experience
