Entrepreneurship Certification 7/2-8/9/18 (11th & 12th Grades)

Program Overview

The Young Entrepreneurship Certificate Program is designed to introduce high school seniors to the fundamentals of entrepreneurship. This program will explore the various aspects of why entrepreneurship occurs, how it occurs, and what is needed for it to be sustained. Students will have an opportunity to think critically by putting the pieces of the entrepreneurship puzzle together. They will also gain practical experience by developing their business idea into a conceptual business model and business plan, create a marketing plan, and craft a sales pitch to sell their entrepreneurial idea. .

 

Program Objectives

By the end of this program, the students will be able to:

  • Define entrepreneurship, its related vocabulary and business terms
  • Identify and discuss well-known entrepreneurs and existing companies
  • Give examples of problems/gaps that were solved/filled by entrepreneurs
  • Describe why entrepreneurship is an attractive business option for some people and not others
  • Understand and state the purpose of an Executive Summary
  • List and define the basic legal business entities
  • Share the variety of ways entrepreneurial companies seek financing
  • Explain a real-life problem/gap, in their own words
  • Explain and apply the S.M.A.R.T. goal concept to outline a process for developing focused ideas
  • Create a conceptual business model and business plan from an entrepreneurial idea
  • Identify target markets and create marketing messages to get noticed
  • Present, communicate, and sell their entrepreneurial idea confidently and clearly

Week 1 - July 2 - July 3 (Prof. Ron Jones)
The World of Entrepreneurship – What is the reality of entrepreneurship?

-          Entrepreneurs and entrepreneurial companies

-          Success and failures of entrepreneurship

-          Inspirational stories from local entrepreneurs

 

Week 2 - July 9 - July 12 (Prof. Annette Baron)
The Entrepreneurial Vision – Why entrepreneurship?

-          The choices, risks, and rewards of being an entrepreneur

-          Fundamental terms and definitions that entrepreneurs should know

-          The mindset and characteristics of an entrepreneur

-          Identifying objectives and setting S.M.A.R.T. goals

-          Understanding business lifecycles

-          Defining a crystal clear entrepreneurial idea


Week 3 - July 16 - 19 (Prof. Michael Gatlin)

The Plan for Success – What is your business model and business plan?

-          Defining ultimate business goal and strategic approach to achieve it

-          Selecting a business structure

-          Creating a business model and business strategy for success

-          Creating a business plan to attract investors

-          Building your business team

-          Patents and idea protection

-          Getting funded: Angel investors, venture capitalists, banks loans, and crowdsourcing


Week 4 - July 23 - 26 (Prof. Annette Baron)

The Business Focus – What will you do as an entrepreneur?

-          Business concepts: filling a gap, solving a problem, or providing pleasure or fun

-          Exploring an entrepreneurial career path

-          Side hustles: Gigs, freelancing, and consulting

-          Personal experience stories

-          Feasibility analysis

 

Week 5 - July 30 - August 2 (Prof. Michael Gatlin)

The Strategic Marketing Plan – Getting noticed in a noisy world!

-          Brand identity for startups

-          Identifying target markets and prospective buyers

-          Selecting the best marking channels to get noticed

-          Traditional marketing vs. digital marketing strategies

-          The basic of website marketing and development

-          Effective marketing messages and call to actions


Week 6 - August 6 - August 9 (Prof. Ron Jones)

The Sales Pitch – Selling your entrepreneurial idea!

-          Fundamental selling skills to sell your idea and yourself

-          Communicate an entrepreneurial idea with clarity and confidence

-          Developing and using visual aids (PowerPoint) to add value to the sales presentation

-          Pitch and present an entrepreneurial idea to investors
