High School Summer Transition Program for Students with Learning Disabilities


One Week Pre-College Summer Commuter Program at William Paterson University 


Planning for Your Future: Thinking About Life After High School

This program provides students with IEPs and/or 504 plans the opportunity to experience WPU, learn skills that are necessary for a successful transition into college, and develop career readiness skills. Students will learn about the purpose of IEPs and 504 plans, the difference between modifications and accommodations, the importance of notetaking and study skills, and learn the difference between high school and college modifications and accommodations in special education. This is our COMMUTER section--students will be dropped off and picked up. 


Students will be given the opportunity to participate in two workshops throughout the course of their day:


Academic and Life Skills Readiness: 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

The objective of this course is to help students identify their strengths and weaknesses in their academic coursework. Students will gain personal and professional skills and attributes which will allow them to enjoy an independent lifestyle and compete in competitive work environments.


During this course, students will learn and practice the following skills:

· Effective and efficient study and note-taking skills

· Time management through prioritizing tasks

· Critical thinking skills

· Personal Money Management

· Communication skills, conflict resolution techniques, self-advocacy skills

· Learn the difference between high school and college regarding modifications and accommodations in special education

· End-of-course Personal Accomplishment Presentation


Academic Writing for College: 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

This course emphasizes the writing process and concentrates on the organization and development of ideas in written form. Correct language usage, research skills, document presentation, and public speaking skills are covered. Particular attention is given to writing techniques that will enable students to communicate successfully in various tasks.


(Lunch Provided in cost of program): Students will be allowed to foster social interaction and relationships, as well as hone their independence skills. The cost of meals will be included for all students.
