Oppositional Defiant Disorder
An estimated five to 16 percent of children and teens are diagnosed annually with Oppositional Defiant Disorder, a condition characterized by an angry, irritable mood, defiant behavior and vindictiveness. Dr. Stacom will review the definition and symptoms of ODD, describe both genetic and environmental risk factors, outline evaluation and discuss a range of treatment options, including therapy for both the youngster and family.

Children and Concussion
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, four to five million concussions occur each year; among teenagers, concussions are the single largest cause of emergency room visits. Ms. Ginart will review the incidence of concussions in specific sports, describe the signs of concussion in children and adolescents, discuss protocols for concussion evaluation, and recommendations for recovery. She will offer suggestions for working with youngsters, families and school staff to develop a shared plan for the child’s return to the classroom and resume participating in sports.

Children and Diabetes
According to the American Diabetes Association, children with type 2 diabetes are at increased risk for high blood pressure and kidney disease and their disease appears to progress more rapidly. Ms. Magnani will discuss strategies for managing diabetes in school-age children, including maintaining blood sugar targets. She will describe the social and psychological challenges experienced by children with diabetes and provide ways that parents and school staff can help the child. Finally, she will review the devices used to treat diabetes and provide a range of resources for school staff and families.

Children and Gender Identity
Dr. Blaustein will review the stages of gender identity and outline the biological, psychosocial and environmental factors that increase a child’s risk for the development of gender dysphoria--- youngsters whose “experienced gender identity” is different from their biological sex. She will explore the ethical and practical challenges of including youngsters with gender dysphoria in school, sports and other activities and offer strategies for supporting the youngster, family and school staff.
