Building Mathematical Foundations 7/25-8/5/16

What was considered a good education 50 years ago, however, is no longer enough for success in college, career, and citizenship in the 21st century. It is our responsibility, to do whatever we can to help our students connect learning with real life and to provide them with the necessary skills to build their math foundation and prepare them for success.

As students are preparing for this new global society, teaching mathematics must be enhanced by incorporating the 4 Cs: critical thinking, communication, collaboration and creativity.

This two week program will increase students’ conceptual knowledge of the relationship among fractions, decimals and percent. They will also be able to apply this newly found conceptual knowledge to word problems that include rates, ratios and proportions. Students will also learn the purpose for the x and y coordinate system and how it can be used to solve real-world problems algebraically.

As a result of implementing the 4Cs, students will be better equipped to meet the demands of higher level mathematical thinking. Feedback will also be provided to parents through pre and post assessments that are aligned to the NJ Common Core Standards for Mathematics and that incorporate the Standards for Mathematical Practice.

Objectives:

  1. Critical thinking – students will make sense of the relationships among fractions, decimals and percent, in order to develop strategies that will be used to solve them.
  2. Communication – students will learn to foster relationships through communication and build upon their own knowledge by communicating with their peers, in order to solve real-world word problems.
  3. Collaboration – students will collectively solve ratio and rate problems with their peers, through core aligned activities that incorporate teamwork.
  4. Creativity – students will find alternate solutions to solve algebraic word problems and then share with their peers.
