Description: This short course introduces the concepts, vocabulary, and state of the art

Of mobile design and development in the cloud. Participants come away with both conceptual and

Hands on experience in the key concepts that distinguish mobile/cloud from traditional computing

and web-based enterprise technologies.

Prerequisites: Some understanding of programming (even in 1970s BASIC or Fortran). Online

resources will be available for those with minimal or rusty skills.

Suggested Audience: Anyone with an interest in how mobile apps are created, from the just

curious, to those who want an initial introduction to mobile app design and development.

Key concepts: Includes the distinction between design and development, complexity

management through object oriented programming, the event model, the model view controller

paradigm for effective usability, and mechanisms for web-based transactions.

Practical knowledge: Covers the choice of languages for front end and back end

implementation (e.g. Java, JavaScript, Ruby, Python, PhP, MySQL), as well as emerging higher

level development technologies such as AJAX ,Django, and Adobe tools.

Skills Development: Occurs through hands-on experience building a variety of apps in App

Inventor, followed by a choice of technologies to pursue for Android, iOS, and Windows 8,

depending on individual learning goals.
