Once the songwriter has a melody, lyrics, and chords the next step is to determine the instruments that will accompany the vocalist and exactly what those instruments will play. Effective and creative arranging is an art form unto itself and carries with it a wide range of skills and knowledge. This course will help the composer or songwriter to create an appropriate arrangements through discussions that include the following topics: The Arranger: a job description, Classic & successful song arrangements and what makes them work, Song shapes and forms, Arranging another person’s song, Arranging hooks and other ear-pulling techniques, Arranging pitfalls: Knowing and avoiding Them, Variation: Where and When to use it. (from key changes to counterpoint), Musical Style Analysis: Arrangement approaches in different styles of music, Rhythm Section Arrangements, Vocal arrangements, Brass and Wind Arrangements, “Sweetening” and unusual arrangement choices.
Gregg Bendian is a three-time ASCAP Composer Award winner who has written
extensively for chamber, jazz, rock groups, and television/film soundtracks.
Gregg speaks in great detail about his approach to composition, as well as the
extensive self-produced discography of his own music and his production and
consultation work for SONY/Legacy. Gregg Bendian has worked with some of
the strongest personalities in contemporary music. He has appeared as visiting
artist and composer-in-residence at The Juilliard School, New York University,
Hartt College of Music, Rutgers University, CalArts, Berklee College of Music,
Occidental College, William Paterson University, Peabody Conservatory,
University of Wisconsin, University of Michigan and many others. Gregg has
been a clinician for DW/Paiste/Musser/LP for over 15 years and is featured in
the book, "Percussion Profiles: Interviews, Articles & Discographies of 25 of the
World's Most Creative Percussionists" (Soundworld Publishers/FMR Records).
