Workshop Description:

The February 22 workshop topic will be: Discussing Safe Sex with Teens. Studies from the CDC have shown us that approximately 47% of all high school students in the United States have had sex at least one time—with 1/3 being sexually active. People ages 15 – 24 also account for roughly half of all new cases of STDs; with approximately 750,000 teen pregnancies a year. While these numbers can be startling, they also demonstrate a clear need for safe sex discussions with teens. This workshop will focus on how to communicate effectively with your teens about the importance of contraceptives for both STD prevention and pregnancy prevention. We will also cover how to talk to your teens about the importance of consent; and the varying ways to facilitate active and enthusiastic consent. These concepts can be nerve-wracking to start, but they are vital to protecting your teens’ health. We will offer you tools and resources that will hopefully empower your teens to take proactive roles in their health and carry those tools with them into their adulthood as well.

It is our hope that this workshop will offer anyone who has been seeking a sense of community for parents attempting to have safe sex conversations with their teens some extra support and a safe space to dialogue with members of the community who are living the same experiences.
