Explore the Backyard and its Organisms 

Learn about the physical, chemical, and biological aspects of our local streams as you explore our backyard and travel to High Mountain to collect organisms to study and identify. This is a great opportunity for students who love to spend time outdoors and use their hands while challenging their brains. Experience first-hand how to prepare results in a scientific manner, as well as how to use a lab.  

Adventures in Art History 

The class will journey through the ages as artists of the times, studying the historical period and creating a piece of art.  We will begin as pre-historic cave painters, cruise the Nile in Ancient Egypt and write in hieroglyphics, join the rise of Constantine and mosaic art, move onto the Middle Ages and the Gothic artists of stained glass windows, journey to the Renaissance or “re-birth” from Leonardo’s science discoveries and explorers of the seas, paint in the fashion of Michelangelo and so much more, pass through to Velázquez and become court “reporters” as he was; cross over to the Impressionists and the pointillism of Seurat; tour the Fauves – “Wild Beasts” and Cubism of Picasso and Matisse, voyage to let loose with Jackson Pollack and Abstract Expressionism, and lastly, discover the P-O-P Artists, Warhol, Rauschenberg, Lichtenstein.  The students will have built a portfolio by the end of the class.
