13th Annual Adolescent Summer Literacy Institute 7/8, 7/9, 7/10/2019

Literature for All: An Exploration of Inclusive Resources

This three-day interactive institute is designed for teachers, reading specialists, coaches, librarians, and supervisors. A recent law that that requires boards of education to include instruction, and adopt instructional materials, that accurately portray political, economic, and social contributions of persons with disabilities and lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people.   We will examine instructional strategies and activities that are designed to increase understanding by sharing high quality inclusive resources. Multiple ways to integrate inclusive   K-12 literature into the curriculum will also be presented. 

Featured Presenter

Lesléa Newman is the author of over 50 books including Heather Has Two Mommies, October Mourning, A Letter to Harvey Milk, Writing From The Heart, In Every Laugh a Tear, The Femme Mystique, Still Life with Buddy, Fat Chance and Out of the Closet and Nothing to Wear.

She has received many literary awards including Poetry Fellowships from the Massachusetts Artists Fellowship Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts, the Highlights for Children Fiction Writing Award, the James Baldwin Award for Cultural Achievement, and two Pushcart Prize Nominations. Nine of her books have been Lambda Literary Award finalists.
