New from IT: Request Migration of your User Folder (U: drive) to OneDrive

With the rollout of Microsoft Office 365 on university computers (see announcement here), one significant benefit is the integration of the Office applications with Microsoft's cloud storage tools, OneDrive and SharePoint. OneDrive is for storage of individuals' work-related files and can be thought of a cloud-based User Folder alternative. SharePoint is for storage of departmental or group work-related files and can be thought of as a Group Folder alternative.

Quick Summary
Over the years, WP employees may have become accustomed to using their User Folder (the U: drive on university Windows computers) for storing and accessing their work-related files and documents. As User Folders are located on the campus network, they can only be accessed by computers when on the campus network or connected to the university VPN. With Microsoft Office 365 and it's integration with Microsoft's cloud storage tools, the use of OneDrive offers numerous advantages that can significantly improve your workflow and enhance your work experience (more information below).

To help with the transition, we're excited to share that WP employees can now request to have their User Folders migrated to OneDrive. Future plans call for all User Folders to be transitioned to OneDrive at a point in the future.

How to Request Migration to OneDrive:
To request the migration of your User Folder (U: drive) to OneDrive, simply login to our Helpdesk ticketing system at www.wpunj.edu/helpdesk to create a Helpdesk ticket. When creating your ticket, use the Request Type of User Folder/Groups then User Folder to OneDrive Migration Request. One of our staff members will then work with you to migrate your data.

We also do offer migration assistance for migrating campus-based Group Folders to Microsoft's SharePoint cloud storage. If your department has an interest in that, you can request additional assistance by creating a ticket using the Request Type of SharePoint and then the appropriate sub-category.

More Detailed Information (for those interested)

Here are some of the benefits of using OneDrive for storage of files and documents:

Anywhere, Anytime Access: Files kept in OneDrive are securely stored in the Microsoft cloud, allowing you to access them from any device with an internet connection. Whether you are on campus, at home, or on the go, your documents are available.

Streamlined Sharing: Sharing files and folders with colleagues, both inside and outside the university, is simplified. You can set permissions, control access, and collaborate effortlessly.

Enhanced Collaboration: OneDrive's seamless integration with Office 365 applications allows for real-time collaboration among colleagues. Multiple users can edit, comment, and collaborate on documents simultaneously.

Automatic Backup: OneDrive automatically backs up your files to the cloud, providing robust data protection against potential loss or damage to your computer. You can easily recover previous versions of files.

Increased Storage Capacity: With OneDrive, you have ample cloud storage space (1 TB of individual storage).
