Deadline to waive the Student Health Insurance - February 20, 2026

In accordance with the state law, William Paterson University is required to offer health insurance coverage for purchase by students who are enrolled full-time each academic year.  The plan being offered for the 2025/2026 academic year is through Aetna Student Health. For health insurance purposes, full time is defined as an Undergraduate taking 12 or more credit hours or a Graduate student taking 9 or more credits and Biology/Biotechnology graduate students taking 8 or more credit hours and Doctor of Clinical Psychology students taking 6 or more credits must either waive or self-enroll prior to the deadline date.    Full-time students as defined above, are automatically billed for health insurance but have the opportunity to waive/opt-out of this coverage by providing evidence of health insurance coverage to the University Sponsored insurance company by the waiver deadlines published by the University.

WPOnline students
Full-time students enrolled exclusively in the WPOnline program are not required to have health insurance offered through WPU.

2026 Spring/Summer - Half Year Insurance Plan
The Student Health Insurance plan for the 2026 Spring/Summer terms was automatically billed to all new incoming full-time students or if the student was part-time for the Fall 2025 semester and became full-time for the 2026 Spring semester.  Students who waived the half year insurance plan in the spring may not re-enroll unless there is a qualifying life event.  A qualifying life event is a change in your situation, like getting married, having a baby, adoption or losing health coverage that allows you to enroll in health insurance within the first 31 days of the event outside the Open Enrollment Period.  To enroll due to a qualifying life event, contact University Health Plans at 833-251-1114.

Health Insurance Enrollment/Waiver Information
Students are required to either waive or self-enroll in the University Sponsored Insurance Plan each academic year.  Students who plan to keep the University Sponsored insurance may self-enroll prior to the University enrollment period.  For students who have other insurance coverage that is comparable to the University Sponsored Insurance and do not wish to supplement their plan with the University's Plan, must complete the on-line waiver form to have this charge removed from their bill.  To self-enroll or waive the insurance plan, click on www.universityhealthplans.com/wpunj and follow the instructions.  For video instructions on how to waive the insurance, click on Waiver video.  WPUNJ has partnered with University Health Plans to administer the plan and help with waiver, enrollment, or benefit-related questions. University Health Plans can be reached at 833-251-1114 or info@univhealthplans.com.

The deadline date to waive or enroll in the Student Health Insurance annual plan is February 20, 2026.  If you do not complete the waiver by the deadline date or self-enroll, you will be automatically enrolled in the Aetna Health Insurance after the waiver deadline.  Once enrolled, there are no cancellations or refunds.

Make sure you check your WPUNJ email account for an email from University Health Plans regarding the status of your waiver or enrollment into the plan.
