William Paterson University invites applications for a twelve month tenure-track position as Access Services Librarian at the rank of Librarian III.

Under the supervision of the Assistant Director for Access and Information Services, the Access Services Librarian plans, organizes, supervises, and coordinates services and staff for circulation, course reserves, stacks, and related patron services.


The David and Lorraine Cheng Library is a major center of activity within William Paterson University, admired for its high standards of customer service and commitment to student success.  The Access Services Librarian plans, organizes, supervises, and coordinates services and staff in Lending Services, which is responsible for all library circulation related activities.


Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Planning, organizing, and coordinating the Library’s Lending Services for circulation, reserves, stacks and building maintenance, and related patron services.
  • Providing supervision, training, and support for Lending Services staff (full-time, part-time) and student assistants; working with relevant Library and University units to develop policies and procedures for circulation and related services.
  • Developing and implementing circulation, reserve, and copyright policies and procedures and communicating to Library personnel and users.
  • Collaborating with Information Systems, Registrar’s Office, Student Accounts, and other campus departments to maintain accurate Banner database information; fielding questions and concerns regarding Library policies and procedures.
  • Providing up-to-date training and support for the circulation module in the integrated library system, including revisions of the policy file and circulation calendar, and preparing reports as needed.
  • Maintaining current knowledge about circulation processes, reciprocal borrowing, service enhancements, and copyright compliance.
  • Performing routine administrative functions within Lending Services, including scheduling, monitoring cash funds and reciprocal borrowing.
  • Participating in the Library’s User Education and Liaison programs.
  • Serving as a Selector to assigned departments related to collection development activities.
  • Serving on Library, University, regional and national committees as appropriate.
  • Performing other duties as assigned that are appropriate for the position.


Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in Library Science (by time of appointment) - American Library Association (ALA) accredited.
  • Second master’s degree required by time of application for tenure.
  • Experience working in an academic library.
  • Knowledge of emerging technologies in Access Services.
  • Experience working with an integrated library system or library services platform. 


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Second master’s degree preferred at time of appointment. 
  • Some supervisory experience.
