Gennifer Furst

Professor • Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice

Hi! I’m Professor Furst. I began teaching at WPU in 2006. I'm a Professor in the Sociology & Criminal Justice Department. My area of focus is incarceration: most of my research has been about programs inside carceral facilities. I'm particularly interested in dog training programs and have written a book and numerous articles about them.

I have a background in Psychology (BA and MA) and earned my PhD in Criminal Justice from CUNY Graduate Center/John Jay. Prior to teaching full-time, I worked at the Correctional Association of New York as an advocate for incarcerated men.

I am a first-generation college student. I welcome any other first-gen students to reach out to me any time, about any situation. I asked a lot of people a lot of questions as I pursued my educational and professional goals. It's important to me to help others on their journey.
