Mark Ellis

Professor • Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice

Dr. H. Mark Ellis joined the Department of Sociology Criminal Justice, and Social Work in 1996 and has taught a variety of courses on topics such as: Social Stratification; The Social Organization of Work; The Sociology of Police; Senior Seminar in Sociology: (Culture); Research Methods; Complex Organizations; Sociology of Education; Contemporary Issues in the Workplace; Social Problems; Sociology of Women; and Senior Seminar in Criminal Justice.

He is the recipient of the Faculty Excellence Award in Teaching (2004) and Faculty Excellence Award in University Service (2016) from William Paterson University. Professor Ellis is also the co-founder of the New Jersey Association of New Student Advocates (NJANSA), which is a state-wide organization consisting of higher education managers from private and public and two-year and four-year institutions devoted to student success. NJANSA has been recognized by the national organization of First-Year Experience as a regional organization making a difference.

In addition, Dr. Ellis currently serves as the Chief-of-Faculty and Dean of Academic Affairs at the W.E.B. Du Bois Scholars Summer Institute at Princeton University where he has been on faculty since 1997. Professor Ellis conducted bias training for the NJ Judicial College Supreme Court Committee on Judicial Education. Professor Ellis also co-presented a workshop on microaggressions to the New Jersey State Bar Association. He has been appointed as a faculty member of the NJ Judicial College and serves as a board member on the NJ Judicial College Supreme Court Committee on Judicial Education.

Professor Ellis has conducted numerous workshops and trainings on diversity, equity, and inclusion at various institutions and organizations such as Felician University, Saint Peters University, Montclair State University, Kean University, Seton Hall University, and Raritan Valley Community College. Dr. Ellis has served in a variety of positions and on many committees at the University some of which include: Vice Chair, Faculty Senate; Department Assistant Chair; Interim Graduate Director of Sociology; Director of the American Democracy Project; Direct of the First-Year Seminar; Director of the M.O.S.T. Program; Middle States Committee; Dean Search; ART Committee; Union Observer Promotions Committee; Strategic Planning Committee; External Honors Thesis Committee Member, Swarthmore College; Co-Chair Mission Statement Committee; Director of the Criminal Justice Program, and on many other committees during his tenure at the university. He has also published in the areas of race, education, technology, and pedagogy.

Dr. Ellis earned his BA in Sociology from Montclair State University, his MA, and PhD from Northwestern University, and he holds a Certificate of Program Completion in the Management Development Program in Higher Education Administration from Harvard University. During graduate school, Dr. Ellis was the recipient of the Winch Award for Outstanding Graduate Student Lecturer. Dr. Ellis also studied classical piano performance at the Peabody Institute of Music, Oberlin Conservatory of Music, and at the Manhattan School of Music.
