July 18 – July 21: (4 Days) Grades 6 – 8 Twilight Zone and Social Awareness
Twilight Zone and Social Awareness: Rod Serling was a visionary and advocate for social justice who produced sharp social commentary in The Twilight Zone. He predicted climate change and global warming in the episode “The Midnight Sun.” gave a remembrance of Emmet Till in "I Am the Night—Color Me Black," and critiqued the fashion world’s shift from the size 14 and voluptuous Marilyn Monroe to the skinny British Invasion of Twiggy in “Number 12” and “Fashionably Ill.” In “The Shelter,” he demonstrated how fast people turn on each other and hoard…sound familiar?
Rod Serling’s favorite episode was his tribute to the victims of the holocaust and he wanted people to always remember the horrors man can commit to man in “Deaths Head Revisited.”
“A sickness known as hate. Not a virus, not a microbe, not a germ—but a sickness nonetheless, highly contagious, deadly in its effects. Don't look for it in the Twilight Zone—look for it in a mirror. Look for it before the light goes out altogether.” - Rod Serling from "I Am the Night—Color Me Black…"
