Pre-Calculus Clinic and Academic Writing for College Combination (Commuter) 7/10-7/21/2017

Pre-Calculus Clinic

This course is designed to help students strengthen their skills to take pre-calculus and beyond. The class will revolve around exploring ideas such as inequalities, exponents and radicals, absolute value, functions(polynomial, rational, exponential, logarithmic, etc.), and trigonometry. Students will work collaboratively to master these topics by practicing problem solving, participating in explorations, and applying the use of a graphing calculator.

Academic Writing for College

This course emphasizes the writing process and concentrates on the organization and development of ideas in written form. Correct language usage, research skills, and document presentation are covered. Particular attention is given to writing techniques that will enable the student to communicate successfully in various tasks.

This class prepares you for college-level reading, writing, and analysis. Whether you take a math, economics, or philosophy course, you will have to read and understand the course material. This course will help you develop the skills you need in other college courses. Please don’t think about this course in isolation; instead, think about how your experience here can help make you a better student.

You can expect to read a variety of texts, written by professional writers, and to write about these texts. When you read, you should think deeply about the ideas presented in the text you are studying and the ways in which these ideas are organized. In this course, you will write about what you read to facilitate your understanding of the material and how it relates to your own writing.

Much of what you do in class will be collaborative. That is, you will be working in pairs and small groups with others in the class. Take the opportunity to learn from your classmates; each of you brings a different perspective to reading and writing. Further, in order to be an effective writer, you need to be comfortable sharing your writing with others, getting feedback at each stage of the process.

Journals

You will keep a notebook for writing responses to a particular reading assignment, issues or questions that have arisen during the writing process, in-class writing, and free writing. Time will be allotted during class to write in your journals and to share your responses.

Essays

Over the course of the week, you will write three essays, including one research paper.
