(Grades 6 - 8) Introduction to Business

Introduction to Business

I. Introduction 

This entry level Introduction to Business class will allow age-appropriate tiered discussions for the basic core concepts that enable the business world to function. This class will deliver material via brief lecture method style, followed immediately by an interactive method—students will be given prompts to critically think about the content they just heard. Upon the completion of this course, students will walk away with their leadership skills bolstered and being able to think critically about fresh content. 

II. Objectives 

1) Students will be given a broad view of business, with a wide scope of focus that includes topics such as: dream jobs (career aspirations), redefining the concepts of success/failure, Business Ethics 101, Entrepreneurship, Macro/Micro scope in Business, Modern Leadership, Economics 101, Marketing, Management, Accounting, Finance, Operations, Stock Market 101, and Banking/Investments (Roth IRAs) 

2) Students will be encouraged to interact with this material via “Action Tasks” (prompts), such as: Action Planning (A --> B), SMART Success, Ethics Challenge, Investment Brainstorm, Macro/Micro Flow Chart, Uncommon Leader, SWOT Analysis, and Situational Leadership Challenge just to name a few. 

3) Students will have the opportunity to broaden their horizons, increasing the range of potential career paths and methods to capitalize on them.  

III. Activity 

Students will be asked on the first day of class to write their most ambitious career path (dream job) and then again on the last day—aiming to increase both their ability to believe in their potential and act upon it.
