College Readiness: Civic Engagement (Part 1)

Course Objectives: To familiarize high school students transitioning into college.  This will include actual 101 level Sociology lectures.  This course will also stress the importance of student engagement in extra-curricular activities on and off campus to enhance their personal and career development. 

 

October 16-Overview of Course

 

  • Transitioning from high school to college
  • Importance of Student Civic Engagement-opportunities for
  • Civic engagement on and off campus
  • The role of non-govermental organizations (NGOs) in society, examples.

October 23-NGO Presentations

  • First 101 college lecture-Sociological Perspectives

October 30-Constructing your resume

  • Second 101 college lecture-Ecology
  • Civic/student engagement addressing environmental issues

 

Nov. 6-Third 101 college lecture-Social Stratification

  • Discussion of life after a college education, current social issues of concern to students/young people, the role of art/culture on and off campus


Throughout the courses, youtube presentations will be used by Dr. Shevack to visually articulate key concepts.
