Introduction to Pharmacology 7/30-8/3/18 9am-12pm

Course Description:

Pharmacology is the study of how medicines work in health and disease in Humans and animals.  Pharmacology is therefore the basis of therapeutics and of fundamental importance to medical sciences in Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Pharmacy, Dentistry, and Optometry and other biomedical related disciplines including basic and clinical research.  This is an introductory course to lay the foundation for understanding basic concepts in Pharmacology and the pharmacological basis of therapeutics.

Course Objectives:

  1. To understand the basic concepts in pharmacology and the pharmacological basis of therapeutics.
  2. To introduce students to the core principles of drug action in terms of bioavailability, pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics and mechanism of action of drugs in the treatment of diseases.
  3. To introduce students to understanding drug efficacy, side effects, toxicities, drug interactions and special emphasis on dosage concerns in special populations such as the young, pregnant women and in the elderly.

Student Learning Outcomes:

  1. Students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of basic pharmacological principles and mechanism of action and classification of drugs.
  2. Students will be able to communicate clearly, and in an organized fashion, in writiten form.
  3. Students will become familiar with the therapeutic effects, efficacies, side effects, toxicities and drug interactions.

Medical Terminology 7/30-8/3/18 1-4pm

Course Description:

Medical Terminology is a comprehensive method to the study of medical terminologies associated with body systems, anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, medical diagnosis and procedures.  Medical terminology is specialized in language that is used internationally by health care professionals for the purpose of communicating medical data in a precise and accurate manner.  This course is designed to give students knowledge of medical words, word building, definitions, and word use that is utilized in all areas of medical science.  The course will aid in the basic understanding of health care pre-professional courses.

Course Objectives:

  1. To understand the basic concepts used in medical terminologies
  2. To acquire knowledge about specific medical terms that pertain to the human body in different conditions that affect human health.
  3. To introduce students to some of the most commonly used diagnostic techniques and some examples of clinical cases to provide opportunities to use medical terms and integrate the concepts learned during the course.

Student Learning Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:

  • Accurately define, spell and pronounce medical terms (root, prefixes and suffixes)
  • Build and analyze medical words from component parts
  • Correlate medical words parts with usage in anatomy, pathology, treatment and medical specialties
  • Demonstrate the use of common medical terms related to the body systems covered.
  • Identify a common pathologic condition for the major systems covered.
  • Know and write the meanings of common abbreviations used for the body systems covered.
