Forensic Science (CSI) 7/23-7/27/18

Course Description

Have you ever wanted to work in a lab, analyzing evidence to help catch criminals like they do in shows like CSI?  This 5-day course will provide students a hands-on opportunity to discover how science solves crimes.  Throughout this program students will learn about several different topics including fingerprint analysis, blood evidence, bite mark comparison, forensic anthropology, DNA evidence, and more!  At the end of the week, students will get a chance to use all the skills they have acquired to solve a staged crime scene. 

5-day Outline

 

Day 1

  • Crime Scene Processing, Packaging, and Safety.  
  • Identifying unknown substances (Using physical characteristics / chromatography)

Day 2

  • Fingerprinting
    • Classification (ink pad)
    • Dusting and lifting
    • Individual characteristics (using balloons & ink)
    • Superglue-fuming method (demo)

Day 3

  • Blood Evidence
    • Blood Typing (Clumping lab)
    • Blood Spatter
  • Impression Evidence
    • Footprint evidence
    • Bite mark comparison (Part 1 - preparing unknowns and standards)

Day 4

  • Bite Mark Comparison (Part 2 - challenge)
  • Anthropology
    • Skeletal Evidence to determine gender, biological ancestry, and height, and approximate age.
  • DNA Evidence
    • DNA Extraction (using a strawberry)

Day 5

  • Review of all topics covered throughout the week
  • CRIME SCENE SOLVING
