Comedy Writing for the Web (Students entering grades 8-12) 7/16-7/20/18

Ever wonder how the hilarious articles, blogs, and videos you view on the web came to be? From the minds of individuals like yourself who took the time to sit down and write their funny thoughts down!

In Comedy Writing for the Web, students will learn how to craft original comedic copy—from short stories to essays to scripts for video sketches—and publish their content on the Internet through platforms like WordPress, Tumblr, and YouTube. Together, we’ll work through three stages of publishing a humorous piece: from concept ideation to transcript production to web publishing. We’ll explore what mediums make the most sense for types of comic ideas, methods to enhance one’s comedy writing, and how to barrel through writers’ block.

Students will also learn how to voice their opinions in a collaborative environment, as daily mock writers’ rooms will be held where constructive critique and feedback will be encouraged. Websites like The Onion, writers such as David Sedaris, and scripts that include Seinfeld will all be examined. By the end of the week, students will have written a piece that is ready to live on the web.

Topics covered per class:

1. Developing your comedic premise

2. Short story, essay, or sketch: what form will your writing take?

3. You can’t right write right without editing… am I right?

4. Characters can be a sketchy development

5. Getting published is as easy as: host, post, and promote
