Language, Race, and Culture:  Transforming Learning in the Multilingual Content Classroom. 

This year’s keynote speaker is Dr. Theresa Y. Austin, a professor of Teacher Education and Curriculum Studies at the University of Massachusetts.  Holding a Ph.D. from the University of California at Los Angeles, Dr. Austin draws upon critical race and sociocultural theories to examine language and literacy policies and planning for multilingual learners from a broader social perspective and discursive microanalytic level. Her transnational scholarship addresses ethnolinguistic and cross-cultural issues in planning language and literacy curriculum, teacher inquiry, technology-assisted learning, assessment and evaluation for learning second and world languages (African American English, ESL/EFL, Spanish, Japanese, etc).

Dr. Austin’s scholarship appears in Multicultural Education and Technology Journal, Modern Language Journal, Journal of Educational Foundations, Colombian Applied Linguistics Journal, Critical Inquiry in Language Studies Journal, Northeast, Foreign Language Annals, Teachers College Record, and others. She is on the editorial advisory boards of several journals: Multicultural Education & Technology Journal, Journal of Language, Identity, and Education, etc.

How do race, and culture influence multilingual teaching and learning in K-12 education?

This interactive presentation will address ways in which language use indexes our racial and cultural identities and how this can be harnessed to promote transformative learning across languages and content-based literacies. Using resources from her own life experiences, collaborative projects with multilingual teachers and students, and research literature on raciolinguistics, critical multimodal literacies, and transformative learning. Dr. Austin will illustrate how significant issues at the intersections of race and class, gender, language, culture may go unheeded. She will engage the audience with a critical process to help build instruction that not only can meet current standards but holds promise for teachers and learners transforming their understanding of content matter together in a way that reflects their histories and lives across these intersections.
