Making A Difference: Leadership and Principles of Sociology (Resident) 7/11-7/15/16

Morning Program: Making A Difference Leadership through Community Service 

Who are the leaders of tomorrow? What are you doing to make a difference today? How are you lending a helping hand? This workshop empowers students to be positive role models and to strive to realize their potential without minimizing the value of teamwork.  Students will participate in a variety different leadership exercises and also partake in community service activities in and around the William Paterson campus. Students will learn more about themselves, others, and the world around them through fun and interactive activities, while building techniques to develop trust and collaboration.  In this 24/7 connected world, this program will help students understand different types of leadership styles, how to work with others, and how important their contributions are to the community and beyond. Students will receive a certificate of completion at the end of the program for leadership and service (10 hours of community Service).

Afternoon Program: Principles of Sociology 

The Principle of Sociology workshop is an invitation for young adults to join an exciting conversation about why we do what we do in our society and what we can do to make a better world.  This course describes the structure and dynamics of human society, and interprets social behavior within the context of modern society and culture.  It includes an examination of such topics as the culture; social structure and systems; socialization; conformity and deviance; social stratification and social class; inequalities stemming from gender, race and ethnicity, religion, and age; the major social institutions of the family, education, the economy, the political system, the crime and justice system; and belief systems; human ecology; rural, urban and suburban life; popular culture; and social movements and social change.  

Residential Description: William Paterson University lays down the foundation to prepare student for success, with an option to stay on campus to experience college life.  While the focus is on academics and learning, the social experience that results from bringing students together is an integral part of our summer program. Students discover the joy of living, studying, and relaxing on a beautiful suburban university campus with state-of-the-art facilities, design, and technology. Students will participate in structured and supervised evening activities, dine in our cafeteria, students will be assigned a roommate and two suitemates to meet new friends. College and graduate students are hired to mentor, supervise and reside with the resident students. This is an opportunity not to be missed!
