Academic Mathematics for College 7/11-7/22/16

The primary goal of this program is to prepare students for college-level mathematics. Proficiency in these mathematical concepts, called Basic Skills, is required before a student can earn graduation credit at the college or university level.

During this course, students will focus on the topics tested in the Basic Skills mathematics test given to incoming college/university freshmen. There will be a brief review of the arithmetic of whole numbers, signed numbers, fractions, decimals, and percent, but the primary focus will be on polynomial arithmetic, algebraic expressions, factoring, graphing, and solving equations. A more detailed description of this content is provided in the topical outline.

Classes will follow an application-oriented approach that begins with a discussion of how these skills are used in our personal lives and professions. After this discussion, a workshop-oriented approach will be used in which learners will spend most of their time brainstorming and problem-solving with peers in small, guided study groups. As part of this experience, students will be encouraged to develop their leadership skills and mentored in the art of collaboration. Finally, since mathematics is a largely a discipline of logic, students will be provided with a variety of additional problems that can help them practice the skills needed for the Basic Skills.

Class Format

The format below is a cyclical sequence that will be followed throughout the course.

  1. Discussion of concept application
  2. Guided application of mathematical concepts in study groups
  3. Class discussion and summary of concept solutions
  4. Provision of practice exercises students can
  5.  complete as homework during the course and/or after the course is completed.

The program also includes access for students to use the MindTap Math Foundations software, which is built on the realities that students’ face in their daily lives, MindTap® Math Foundations is a personalized learning system focused on four core areas of student development -- Engagement, Persistence, Retention and Critical Thinking. Unlike any other learning experience available, MindTap breaks down the barriers to course completion by bringing elements from the interactive, gamified world to transform learning so students stay engaged, persist through challenges, feel more supported and connected to instructors, students, and to their own learning– all at an affordable price.

Accessible to students on their mobile devices or computer – wherever and whenever it’s convenient – they learn step-by-step methods in the areas they need help. Practice problems are individually selected based on what students need to know and skills already mastered. Skill and Concept Building Games and Game-like activities are integrated to help students engage in and persist through the curriculum, master new concepts, and reinforce old ones. Skill building short Learning Burst activities can be practiced on the fly. Interactive videos engage students and go beyond by checking key concepts for understanding. Opportunities for collaborative learning support students’ need to be social and motivate them when concepts are challenging.
