Teaching Adolescents to Read Complex Text: Building Skills and Motivation

With the implementation of the Common Core Standards, deep reading of more complex text has become the focus of classroom reading instruction.  This workshop will examine instructional strategies and activities that are designed to increase the older learner’s comprehension of difficult text. Multiple ways to integrate high-quality Young Adult literature to motivate students will also be presented. 

  • Earn 15 professional credit hours 
  • May be taken for 3 graduate credits when linked with ELRL 6260

This year our guest author will be Todd Strasser.  He has written many critically acclaimed novels for adults, teenagers, and children, including the award-winning Can’t Get There from Here, Give a Boy a Gun, Boot Camp, If I Grow Up, Famous, and How I Created My Perfect Prom Date, which became the Fox feature film Drive Me Crazy. His books for middle graders include Abe Lincoln for Class President, Byte Barkley: Secret agent K-9, Don't Get Caught in the Girls' Locker Room, Grizzly Attack, and the best-selling 17-book Help! I'm Trapped in series.  His most recent novel for grades 5 and up, FALLOUT, received a stellar review in the NY Times.
