4H Young Scientist (grades 4th to 6th) 7/5-7/8/16

Balls and Tracks (Tuesday and Wednesday)
The Balls and Tracks project is an engineering challenge based on the designs of a ski jump (or half-pipe) and a roller coaster. With simple pipe insulation and marbles, children create a series of games involving a ball rolling through twists and turns, just like an amusement park ride. During this process, children learn to anticipate how the ball will behave in various track shapes and configurations. They come away from these activities with an increased understanding of the forces of motion, as well as a practical sense of how the materials affect each other.

Straw Rockets (Thursday and Friday)
In this project, children experiencing the basic principles of aeronautics as they design and test simple rockets made from drinking straws of different sizes and powered by nothing more than a push of air. The children work together in teams of 2 or 3, troubleshooting and problem solving until they create the optimum rocket and launching system. As they work through the challenges in this Straw Rockets project, the children learn about experimenting, testing, making observations, asking questions, and explaining what they have done and why they did it -- the essential elements of critical thinking and the inquiry approach to engineering and science.
