Professional Development Certificate

This special Jazz for Music Educators course features ten intense afternoons of lecture and discussion, improvisation, and performance geared especially to music teachers. Topics covered include: an overview of the stylistic periods of jazz and the major jazz figures; score analysis; pedagogy of improvisation; the adjudication process and “troubleshooting” the public school jazz ensemble; the history of jazz education; conducting techniques; and festival clinic presentations.

Institute participants will:

• Understand and recognize the basic characteristics of the style periods of jazz, and be able to aurally identify the major figures in jazz.
• Aurally recognize the major jazz forms, including blues and popular song forms.
• Comprehend the basic principles of jazz improvisation, and how to communicate them clearly to beginning improvisers.
• Be able to demonstrate the basic techniques of jazz conducting.
• Recognize performance problems and issues in public school jazz ensembles, and be able to diagnose and correct them.
