Jazz Institute for Music Educators
Professional Development Certificate
This special Jazz for Music Educators course features ten intense afternoons of lecture and discussion, improvisation, and performance geared especially to music teachers. Topics covered include: an overview of the stylistic periods of jazz and the major jazz figures; score analysis; pedagogy of improvisation; the adjudication process and “troubleshooting” the public school jazz ensemble; the history of jazz education; conducting techniques; and festival clinic presentations.
Institute participants will:
- Understand and recognize the basic characteristics of the style periods of jazz, and be able to aurally identify the major figures in jazz.
- Aurally recognize the major jazz forms, including blues and popular song forms.
- Comprehend the basic principles of jazz improvisation, and how to communicate them clearly to beginning improvisers.
- Be able to demonstrate the basic techniques of jazz conducting.
- Recognize performance problems and issues in public school jazz ensembles, and be able to diagnose and correct them.
