Mobile App Design Across Platforms 3/2/2015
Description: Mobile App Design is the process through which the user experiences the “view”
the model/view/controller design framework for interactive technologies. This short course
covers the basics of event driven design both in terms of receiving input data as gesture,
photo/video, sound, location and device position, and providing results via graphical layout that
can include video and audio assets.
Prerequisites: Experience in Web Design, Programming, or the equivalent of “Introduction to
Mobile App Design and Development in the Cloud”.
Suggested Audience: This is for anyone who is, or aspires to be a user interface designer, or
who manages these designers. Appropriate for entrepreneurs who need to know what skill set
to expect from UI/UX designers for handheld/mobile devices.
Key concepts: Focuses entirely on the user experience and includes user interface design
principles, contrasting expectations for the major platforms (Android, iOS, and Windows), new
modalities for user input including touch, voice, geolocation, and device position (e.g. Accelerometer use),
and device constraints on output including device size, layout, visual and sound quality.
Data and asset (graphic, sound) management is also addressed.
Practical knowledge: Starting with wireframe design, participants build sample interfaces in
both Android and iOS to gain an appreciation for the similarities and differences on these two
predominant platforms. A full appreciation for the “view” component is achieved in the context of
“controller” and “model” code provided.
Skills Development: Participants will be able to design a full range of user interface types for
Android and iOS (individuals may pursue Windows as well), and know how they are “wired up”
to underlying code. They will be able to use the established terminology for effective software
development.
