Creating Digital Age Learning Environments for English Language Learners

Heather Rubin, L.I. RBE-RN
Nassau Boards of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES)

The emphasis on the development of advanced literacies for ELs through the use of digital media is a necessary shift in TESOL methodology. The development of receptive and expressive language skills in the digital age includes not only listening, speaking, reading, and writing, but also includes viewing and visually representing. This presentation is an introduction to creating digital age learning environments that support English Learners. Digital age teaching for English Learners (DATELs) is a student-centered, technology-enhanced approach that increases opportunities for contextually rich, authentic language practice while promoting 21st-century literacy skills. A DATELs approach engages students in synchronous and asynchronous learning opportunities that provide flexible access to deeper academic content, while also developing language skills.   Multimedia platforms and online collaboration tools such as Google Workplace, Office 365, Screencastify, FlipGrid, and Perusall will be discussed.

About the Presenter: Heather Rubin is the Administrative Coordinator for the NYSED Long Island Regional Bilingual Education Resource Network (LIRBERN) at Eastern Suffolk BOCES. She has over 20 years of experience supporting academic achievement and equity for English Language Learners in K-12 and higher education settings.
