Teach Less and Learn More: Area and Volume Formulae of Various Geometric Figures Target Audience

Target Audience:  Grades 6 to 8

Description:  The NJ Middle School State Standards describe how students need to discuss, develop, and justify formulas for areas of plane figures by decomposing, rearranging, and relating them to rectangles. Learn how to help students improve their mathematical thinking, problem solving, and understanding of area formulas through a series of area exploration activities. These activities will also support students’ discovery of the relationships among formulas. In addition, you will learn how this type of instruction helps students build surface area and volume formulas for various types of solids. Participants leave equipped with teaching ideas after engaging in and discussing many hands-on activities.
