Let the Beat Drop 7/11-7/15-16

“Let the Beat Drop” gives a brief exploration of the evolution of music. Students will have a first-hand look at how music has influenced and has been influenced by social movements and has been the sounding board for popular culture. Musicians have long used their craft as a means to broadcast ideas, challenge principles, and be the voice of the people. Take a ride through music and time, from the music of the Harlem renaissance to R&B and contemporary pop, landing in the era of hip-hop as it stands today.

This class is Common Core aligned, and focuses on critical thinking, active student participation and engagement with the material. Students will form their own analyses and opinions of the music and its impact on popular culture. A variation of primary sources will be utilized to enhance historical context, which include multimedia components and web resources that provide access to sound recordings, images, video, and documents. Students will create a historical playlist that will be shared within the class.
