Getting to the “So What?”: Teaching Middle and High School Students

Historical Research and Analysis

A workshop for teachers

Using the 2016 theme Exploration, Encounter, Exchange, our hands-on activities will guide teachers from thinking about “big ideas” inherent in the theme to essential questions that could be explored through the theme. Participants could then learn how to find topics – in particular NJ-based topics – that could be explored in light of the essential question and how to better analyze sources and develop a thesis using the sources that uses critical thinking skills versus a straightforward presentation of facts about the topics. This focus is geared towards increasing the historical context of the research projects. Links to Common Core Curriculum Standards in English Language Arts (reading, writing and speaking) will be emphasized. The activities teachers participate in will empower them to replicate the activities with their students, teach creativity and critical thinking through historical topics and prepare them for the local and national History Day contest.
