Exploring Colonial Slavery in the North with Primary Sources 11/17/2021 (Non-PDS Schools Only)

Audience: All interested school personnel

Description: The 1719 William Trent House Museum uses several primary sources to describe how William Trent, the wealthy merchant who built the Georgian style mansion on his plantation in what became Trenton, and his colonial peers were involved with slavery. These sources have their counterparts for other parts of New Jersey in trade ledgers and account books, probate inventories and wills, letters, newspaper accounts and advertisements, legislation, and court records. This presentation uses the Trent sources to illustrate how primary sources can be used to confirm that slavery was widespread in the northern colonies, present enslaved people as individuals, illustrate both the hardship and indignity of slavery and the resilience and fortitude of enslaved people, and demonstrate how slavery was built on both institutional support and personal decisions.
