Children and Obesity: Innovative School-Based Strategies to Combat A Critical Epidemic
Topic: Children and Obesity: Innovative School-Based Strategies to Combat a Critical Epidemic
According to the Centers For Disease Control, since 1985, obesity has more than doubled in children and quadrupled in adolescents. Today, more than one third of children and teens are either overweight or obese. Dr. Lamacchia will discuss the immediate and long-term effects of obesity, including increased risk for hypertension, heart disease, asthma and type 2 diabetes. Ms. Hozak and Ms. Schaefer will describe the R.U.S.H program, a six week school-based program that engages children, parents, and school staff to learn about the value of healthy eating and physical activity.
