A Day In St. Joseph's Pediatric Emergency Department
More than 40,000 children and adolescents are treated annually in the St. Joseph's pediatric emergency department, one of the busiest in New Jersey. Dr. Feingold and his colleagues will present four cases of boys and girls who were recently treated in the ED. They will describe the child's history and admitting diagnosis, outline the evaluation and treatment and summarize outcome. They will also discuss the actions and interventions of school staff and EMTs prior to admission and the potential impact on youngsters' treatment plan and prognosis.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
According to the Centers For Disease Control, 6.4 million or 11 percent of children nation-wide were diagnosed with ADHD in 2011. One of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders of childhood, approximately 13.2 percent of boys and 5.6% of girls have been diagnosed with ADHD. Dr. Holahan will outline the possible causes and risk factors for ADHD, describe symptoms and discuss the evaluation process. He will summarize treatment options, including the range of treatments available, risks and benefits and stress the importance of communication and collaboration with both the youngster and parents.

Cutting
Cutting, deliberate self-injury, is an inability to cope, in healthy ways, with emotional pain, intense anger or frustration. An estimated one in five females and one in seven males engage in self-injury behavior. Ms. Batista will identify the prevalence of cutting in pre-teens and adolescents, describe risk factors, possible causes and warning signs. She will discuss the range of treatment and support options, including strategies that involve both individuals and communities.

School Refusal in Children
According to the National Association of School Psychologists, school refusal occurs in an estimated five percent of school-age children. Dr. Khanna will describe the characteristics of youngsters who refuse to attend school on a regular basis or who have problems staying in school. She will outline the warning signs and symptoms of school refusal. She will describe the variety of treatment options, including collaboration with parents and school staff, behavioral interventions and support therapy.
