Algebra Clinic is designed for students who need a refresher or who want to enhance their algebra skills before going back to school in September. This is a great opportunity to get ready for the PARCC test in algebra. Topics will include: operations of real numbers and their properties; solving linear equations and inequalities; writing and evaluating algebraic expressions; identifying and evaluating functions; writing linear equations; graphing systems of equations and inequalities; working with operations of polynomials; factoring polynomials; solving quadratic equations s and basic concepts of statistics.
(lab fee and materials included)
Algebra I Clinic Description
Objective: Review skills needed for successful completion of Algebra I as well as a preview of topics that will be taught in the upcoming year.
Method: A workbook will be provided in class that will contain a step by step process of topics covered as well as spaces provided for students to solve examples and take additional notes. A pretest will be given to determine skills the students have and those that need improving. A posttest will be given to show the improvement made on skills. We will attempt to cover as many of the following topics that time will allow:
- Operation of real numbers and their properties
- Solving linear equations and inequalities
- Writing and evaluating algebraic expressions
- Identifying and evaluating functions
- Writing linear equations
- Graphing systems of equations and inequalities
- Working with operations of polynomials
- Factoring polynomials
- Solving quadratic equations
- Basic concepts of statistics
Tentative Weekly Schedule:
Day-one: Pretest, integer operations without a calculator, solving linear equations and inequality, and writing linear expressions.
Day-two: Writing and evaluating algebraic expressions, identifying and evaluating functions, writing linear equations from word problems.
Day- three: Graphing systems of equations and inequalities (maybe solving them algebraically as well), adding/subtracting/multiplying/dividing polynomials.
Day-four: Factoring polynomials, solving quadratic equations. Day-five: Basic concepts of statistics and posttest.
