Capital Group, Capital Research Global Investors

James Terrile ‘87 is an equity portfolio manager at Capital Group, a private firm founded in 1931 that manages more than $2 trillion in equity and fixed income assets for millions of individual and institutional investors. He has nearly three decades of experience, including 25 years at Capital Group. Earlier in his career, as an equity investment analyst at Capital, he covered U.S. health care supplies and equipment, pharmaceutical, and biotech companies. Prior to joining Capital in 1996, Terrile was an equity research analyst for Gabelli Asset Management Company in New York.

A native of Ridgefield, New Jersey, Terrile is a graduate of William Paterson University with a bachelor of music degree in jazz studies and performance, magna cum laude. While at William Paterson, he studied under the renowned bassist Rufus Reid, retired director of the University’s internationally acclaimed Jazz Studies Program, who became a mentor and a friend.

Terrile has been a long-time supporter of WP’s Jazz Studies Program. In 2007, he made a generous donation in support of the University’s Living Jazz Archives, a significant collection of materials that document the legacy of some of jazz’s greatest legends, including Clark Terry, Michael Brecker; Thad Jones, James Williams, and Mulgrew Miller, among others. His gift enabled the University to purchase audio and video equipment, exhibit cases, and shelving to make the Archives space a reality.

In addition, in 2011, he established the Rufus Reid Endowed Music Scholarship Fund in honor of his friend, and through his support and matching gifts from Capital Group, the endowment has grown to more than $320,000. He has been a donor to the music program since 1990 and is a member of William Paterson’s Heritage Society, which recognizes loyal donors who have given to the University for 20 years or more, regardless of gift size.

A dedicated philanthropist, Terrile and his wife, Trevessa, are members of Second Century 200, a select giving group that supports Children’s Hospital Los Angeles through both the First Families Legacy Program and Children’s Fund 100. He is also a member of the advisory board of A Noise Within, a regional theater producer located in Pasadena, California.

In addition to his degree from William Paterson, Terrile holds an MBA from Columbia Business School with Beta Gamma Sigma distinction. He and his family live in Los Angeles.
